Your Asian American Journey

Fall 2023 Group

"In exploring our struggles within our Asian American identity, we find compassion for what could have been, process feelings of guilt and shame as a result of unspoken expectations, and lean in on our faith to discover a more safe and trusting way of being."

        Description

We hope this group is a place where you can find rest, where you can be heard and validated by others who share your struggles. We hope it is a place where you can give yourself permission to question and feel, to just be. This is a storytelling group.

In Redeemer Counseling’s individual sessions and groups, we have found that many Asian American women feel a great deal of anxiety and pressure that they are never able to fully express. They struggle with conflicts in relationships with family, and especially with unspoken expectations. It can be very lonely. In this group, we create a safe and supportive environment for you to share and wrestle with who you are as an Asian American woman.

We ask questions that may be hard to think about on our own. What is my family immigration history and generational trauma? Is it possible to create healthy boundaries with family without feeling guilty? How do I manage the pressure of caring for my parents as they age? How do I manage my feelings of guilt when my parents live on a different continent? How do we overcome emotional suppression as a strategy and allow ourselves to feel more? How do we draw on our faith to rebuild trust and feel safe?

We spend time grieving together for unnamed losses; we heal with the help of others in the group. We learn compassion for ourselves, for others, and for those family members who may have hurt us unintentionally. We learn together to name our losses and release them as a group.

We will cover topics such as:

        • Exploring your Asian American identity
        • Family immigration history, generational trauma
        • Understanding our family genogram
        • Navigating family relationships, conflicts with parents
